DEAD MAN'S JEST
London 1879
Lady Lucy St John Deere keeps a watchful eye over Victorian London’s burgeoning theatreland, and finds trouble at every turn. This time the trouble is haunting every turn on the Music Hall stage.
Comedian Atticus Bloom is a big hit with his Little Old Man routine, till he finds someone has stolen his act. When the imposter is found dead, fingers start pointing. Soon other performers find they’re being ripped off, and suddenly more comics are dying offstage than on it.
Do we suspect the moral guardians in the League Of Decency? Could it be the intriguing Mr Foswell and his scary books of magic? Or perhaps it’s the mysterious Secret Admirer and his endless supply of flowers?
Lady Lucy and her companion Amy are in a race with Inspector Cholmondoley of Bow Street to solve the case. And why doesn’t she mind her own business?
Because if it happens in Theatreland – it is her business.
